Martin simply can’t keep his mouth shut. What can you say? Exactly: nothing — because he’s already back at the microphone recording the next episode. Do you learn something like that in a business degree? Who knows … In any case, Martin has been involved in podcast and radio production for quite some time and discovered his passion for the role of nature documentary narrator with the 5mcc episode “At Mauna Loa”. Als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Wald-, Umwelt- und Ressourcenpolitik hat sie auch beruflich ihre Laufbahn ganz der Nachhaltigkeit gewidmet. Damit bringt sie die so wichtige naturwissenschaftliche Komponente ins Team – und seien wir ehrlich: Naturwissenschaften sind halt einfach leiwand. Man könnte jetzt sagen: „Puh, zum Glück hamma den Klimawandel, sonst hätte die Kathi jetzt keinen Job!“ Von dieser Sichtweise distanziert sich die 5mcc-Redaktion aber vollkommen.

Katharina is a climate change expert and has dedicated herself entirely to climate communication. That may sound easy to say for someone who runs a climate podcast, but it certainly doesn’t end there. As a research associate at the Institute for Forest, Environmental, and Natural Resource Policy, she has also devoted her professional career fully to sustainability. This brings an essential scientific component to the team — and let’s be honest: natural sciences are just really great. One might jokingly say: “Well, good thing we have climate change, otherwise Kathi wouldn’t have a job!” However, the 5mcc editorial team firmly distances itself from that point of view.

Naturwissenschaft ist geil. Das gehört nicht nur gesagt, das gehört in die Welt hinausposaunt. Unser Haus- und Hof-Physiker Lukas macht genau das. Okay, vielleicht posaunt er es nicht hinaus, sondern tubat es hinaus, aber das ist ja fast dasselbe. Im Gegensatz zu seinem Instrument, mit dem er in der Akademischen Bläserphilharmonie Wien für den nötigen Bass sorgt, haben seine Beiträge keinen metallischen Beigeschmack. Stattdessen liefert er taktvolle Sendungen und Kommentare für 5mcc – das ist Musik in unseren Ohren! Ach ja: Haben wir schon erwähnt, dass wir Lukas als unser 5mcc-Küken sehen? Und ja, einen PhD-Anwärter als Küken zu bezeichnen ist völlig normal.

Natural science is awesome. It’s not just something to be said — it should be shouted out into the world. Our in-house physicist Lukas does exactly that. Okay, maybe he doesn’t shout it — he plays it on the tuba — but that’s basically the same thing. Unlike his instrument, with which he provides the necessary bass in the Academic Wind Philharmonic Vienna, his contributions come without any strange metallic aftertaste. Instead, he delivers well-timed episodes and comments for 5mcc — music to our ears! Oh, and did we mention that we consider Lukas our 5mcc “chick”? And yes, calling a PhD candidate a chick is completely normal.

Nachdem Hannah für ihr Studium in Umweltwissenschaften eine Kindernachrichtensendung über die Klimakrise konzipierte, hatte sie Lust auf mehr Wissenschaftskommunikation. Als sie dann die Folge „Schnitzel mit Reis“ von dem tollen Gastautor Konrad Loimer anhörte, war ihr klar, dass sie bei 5mcc mitmischen wollte. Von den Niederlanden aus, wo ein Gewächshaus neben dem anderen steht, möchte sie bei 5mcc gern mehr über Essen und nachhaltige Landwirtschaft berichten. Ihr großer Traum ist, dass 5mcc die deutsche Medienwelt erobert, sodass ihre Großeltern den Podcast im Radio hören können.

After developing a children’s news program about the climate crisis as part of her environmental science studies, Hannah felt eager to pursue more science communication. When she listened to the episode “Schnitzel mit Reis” by the wonderful guest author Konrad Loimer, she knew she wanted to get involved with 5mcc. From the Netherlands — where one greenhouse follows the next — she hopes to contribute more reporting on food and sustainable agriculture at 5mcc. Her big dream is for 5mcc to conquer the German media landscape, so that her grandparents can listen to the podcast on the radio.

Hannah has been listening to science podcasts for many years. During the first lockdown, she felt the urge to trade her earbuds for a microphone. Fortunately, Kathi — her former colleague — brought her on board right away. Through her studies in environmental and bioresource management, she has developed a keen eye for the broader connections between environment, economy, and society. If there’s one thing she’s learned, it’s this: the devil is in the details. That’s why, at 5mcc, she particularly enjoys correcting other people’s comma mistakes.

Ihre Arbeit in Medienprojekten wie Luksuz Produkcija (SLO) und women on air bei Radio Orange war für sie ein wichtiger Einstieg in den konstruktiven Journalismus, in dem „only bad news are good news“ keinen Platz haben. Bei 5mcc bedeutet das verständliche, problem- und lösungsorientierte Klimakommunikation.

Listening to 5mcc quickly makes you want to get involved — at least that was the case for Johanna. She has been part of the 5mcc editorial team since October 2020. Her interest in climate change and climate protection began long before her geography studies and certainly doesn’t end with 5mcc. Her work in media projects such as Luksuz Produkcija (Slovenia) and women on air on Radio Orange provided her with a strong introduction to constructive journalism — where “only bad news are good news” has no place.
